PACKAGING GLOSSARY

The Corrugated packaging industry is full of packaging terms. For ease of reference here are some of the more common ones:-
  • Basis Weight (of containerboard): Weight of linerboard or corrugating medium expressed in terms of pounds per 1,000 square feet or grams per sq.m(gsm).
  • Bundle: A shipping unit of two or more articles wrapped and fastened together by suitable means.
  • Bursting Strength: The strength of material in pounds per square inch, as measured by the Cady or Mullen tester.
  • Cardboard: A thick paper based material.
  • Closure mechanism: Methods of creating a box shape or sealing a box.
  • Corrugated Board – Single Face: The structure formed by one corrugated member glued to one flat facing.
  • Corrugated Board – Single Wall: Also known as Double Face. The structure formed by one corrugated inner member glued between two flat facings.
  • Corrugated Board – Double Wall: The structure formed by three flat facings and two intermediate corrugated members.
  • Crease: An impression or crease in corrugated or solid fibreboard to locate and facilitate folding.
  • Die-Cut: A cut made with special steel rule dies. The act of making a part or container which is cut and scored to shape by such tools. Also used to denote a board which has been die-cut.
  • Dimensions:
              Length – The larger of the two dimensions of the open face.
              Width – The lesser of the two dimensions of the open face.
              Depth – The distance between the innermost surfaces of the box measured perpendicular to the length and width.
  • DWB: Double Walled Board (Three liners and two flutings).
  • Flaps: The closing members of a fibreboard box.
  • Flat Form: Completed box which is not errected. This is the normal method of delivering boxes
  • Flute or Corrugation: One of the wave shapes in the inner portion of combined corrugated fibreboard. Although other flutes, such as “Jumbo,” have been developed, the flutes most commonly used are: Approximate Height:-
              A-flute 4.8 mm 3/16 inch
              B-flute 3.5 mm 3/32 inch
              C-flute 3.6 mm 9/64 inch
              E-flute 2 mm 3/64 inch
  • Fold: A bend in a board which alters the shape.
  • Glue: A term used in the Classifications as a synonym for ‘adhesive.’
  • Knocked-Down (KD): A term denoting that an article is partially or entirely taken apart – not setup.
  • Kraft: A word meaning strength applied to pulp, paper or paperboard produced from wood fibres by the sulfate process.
  • Pad: A corrugated or solid fibreboard sheet or other authorized material used for extra protection or for separating tiers or layers of articles when packed for shipment.
  • Panel: A ‘face’ or ‘side’ of a box.
  • Partitions: A set of corrugated or solid fibreboard pieces slotted so they interlock when assembled to form a number of cells into which articles may be placed for shipment.
  • Score: An impression or crease in corrugated or solid fibreboard to locate and facilitate folding.
  • Sheet: A rectangle of combined board – single or multi-wall – untrimmed or trimmed, and possibly scored one way across the corrugations where such operation is done on the corrugator.
  • Slot: A cut made in a fibreboard sheet, usually to form flaps and thus permit folding. Widths of one-fourth and three-eighths inch are common.
  • Spam: An internet term used to describe unsolicited advertising or junk mail.
  • Stitching or Stapling: Application of metal fasteners to form the joint of fibre boxes or to close boxes. Stitches are machine-formed using wire drawn from a spool. Staples are preformed.
  • Structural Box: A box which is self supporting.
